The
Public Health & Municipal Engineering
Department came into existence as a separate
and independent department,
to cater to the needs of engineering works in municipalities.
Basic engineering functions of this department
include investigation, design, execution of Water
Supply,
Sanitary systems, other
engineering works connected with community development
like roads, community halls, parks, play grounds,
pollution preventive
measures, shopping complexes, auditoriums, swimming
pools and operation and maintenance of municipal
infrastructure
etc., at the requisition of municipality. Engineers
borne on the cadre of this department are deputed
to discharge
the duty of Municipal Engineers in the municipality
to undertake operation, and maintenance of water
supply
and sanitary systems.
Municipal Engineer is also in charge of all other
engineering works of the municipality. |
The
first protected water supply scheme was commissioned
during 1939-40 to supply 3.00 lakh gallons per day for
the population of 20,000 with 15 GPCD with infiltration
gallery in the Munnair river bed as source.
The
installed capacity was raised to 10 lakh gallons per
day by taking improvements in three stages. Thus the
total capacity increased to 20 Lakhs gallons a day. |
