 The Public Health & Municipal Engineering Department came into existence as a separate and independent department, to cater to the needs of engineering works in municipalities. Basic engineering functions of this department include investigation, design, execution of Water Supply, Sanitary systems, other engineering works connected with community development like roads, community halls, parks, play grounds, pollution preventive measures, shopping complexes, auditoriums, swimming pools and operation and maintenance of municipal infrastructure etc., at the requisition of municipality. Engineers borne on the cadre of this department are deputed to discharge the duty of Municipal Engineers in the municipality to undertake operation, and maintenance of water supply and sanitary systems. Municipal Engineer is also in charge of all other engineering works of the municipality.

Public health special division Khammam is having jurisdiction over four municipalities and Bhadrachalam town ship.
 
KHAMMAM TOWN

The first protected water supply scheme was commissioned during 1939-40 to supply 3.00 lakh gallons per day for the population of 20,000 with 15 GPCD with infiltration gallery in the Munnair river bed as source.

The installed capacity was raised to 10 lakh gallons per day by taking improvements in three stages. Thus the total capacity increased to 20 Lakhs gallons a day.

 
KOTHAGUDEM TOWN
Initially M/s Singareni Collieries Company Limited was supplying water to the town from 9 ‘A’ well of Murreduvagu and No.1 well of Yedullavagu. The supply was 8.182 MLD. The Govt. sanctioned a separate scheme worth of Rs.20.38 crores with the financial assistance from HUDCO for Kothagudem drinking water and the same was commissioned on 20.01.2000.

PALWANCHA TOWN

The protected water supply was commissioned during 1974-75 with Murredu vagu as source through infiltration gallery & infiltration wells for old and new Palwancha areas. Improvement works were carried out, to augment the scheme funding through HUDCO and X finance commission funds.

YELLANDU NAGAR PANCHAYAT


The protectec water supply system was originally designed about 60 years back in pre-independce period. It was remodeled by the RWS wing of Public Health Department during the year 1969-71 with Peddachervu as source. Improvements were carried out by the P.R. Department with infiltration wells through Kotilingala source to meet the needs of the growing population. Supply through both the sources is about 7.5 Lakhs gallons.

BHADRACHALAM TOWN SHIP

The town had a protected water supply scheme commissioned and being maintained since 1962. As this is a big pilgrimage center (Sri Seetharamachandraswamy temple) the supply was 2.5 lakh gallons with Godavari river as source. Augmentation of the scheme carried out and the supplies are increased to 5.50 gallons.
