Kancharla Gopanna was the son of Linganna Manthri. His mother Kamamba. He was born in Nelakondapalli in Khammammett Taluk in about 1630 A.D. It was believed that he was the nephew of Akkanna and Madanna, the administrative heads in the Court of Nawab Abdul Hasan Shaw known as Tanisha.

Gopanna had an innate urge from his childhood for renunciation and service to god and mankind. He was well versed in Sanskrit and Telugu and possessed knowledge of Persian and urdu. He went to Golkonda in search of a job fortunately the Tanisha pleased with his saintly nature, posted him as Peshkar in Khammam district. He was deputed as Paragana officer of Palvancha Taluk, as the revenue collections fell into arrears for a long time. He discharged his official duties earnestly and collected revenues efficiently, serving God and mankind daily by prayers and feeding the poor.


It was said that one day, when feeding was going on, in his house, his young son fell into hot grual. The mother saw the dead child, but restrained her sorrow as the news would upset the services that was going in the house. Gopanna took the dead child to the deity and implored to restore life into the boy and to create faith in the Lord, among humanity. Accordingly, his prayer was fulfilled and the boy was brought back to life.

Pokala Dammakka, having heard of the saintly qualities of Gopanna, went to him and revealed her dream and her experiences. Gopanna too having had such a dream, once proceed to Bhadrachalam and made up his mind to construct a temple for Lord Rama.

Gopanna requested the Tanisha to permit him to construct a temple for the Lord, with the revenue collection available with him. He proceeded with the construction work in anticipation of approval by the Tanisha. After the construction of the temple, it became problematic for Ramadas to fix the Sudarshan Chakra on the temple. He was deeply distressed, and had a vision one night and he was directed in the vision by Lord Rama to have a dip in the river Godavari in the morning when he would find a Sudarshan Chakra in the water. Accordingly Ramadas went to the river early in the morning after a sacred bath by him, he found the holy Sudarshan chakra, in his hands and it was fixed by him without difficulty. thus even a Sudarshan Chakra, that is installed on the temple was shaped in the hands of the Lord and presented to Bhakta Ramadas.
