Livestock production is an integral part of farming system. Diary, Poultry, Sheep, Goat rearing and Piggery are providing gainful employment to small and marginal farmers, agricultural labourers, unemployed rural youth and self help group members, protein rich milk, meat and eggs produced from livestock, supplements the diet of rural people.

The Animal Husbandry Department is providing the following services to the public to help increase the production from livestock sector.
 
 Disease control
 Treatment of ailing animals
 Cattle development through Artificial Insemination.
 Fodder development
 Extension activities
 Participation in poverty alleviation programmes.
 
The following are the livestock population in the district as per the latest live stock census conducted during 2003 ( IN LAKHS )

3   SHEEP 3.25
4   GOATS 2.91
5   PIGS 0.31
6   OTHERS 0.58
7   POULTRY 19.04

ADMINISTRATION :- The Joint Director (AH) is the head of the District Administration assisted by (5) Divisional Assistant Directors (AH) in the district. There are (2) Deputy Director (AH) posts i.e., One at Veterinary Polyclinic, Khammam and other is Special Livestock Breeding Programme attached to Joint Director (AH), Khammam.
 

The following are the Division-wise Veterinary Institutions functioning in the district.


Out of the above 238 institutions 229 institutions are having the facility of Artificial Insemination.
