THE ACTIVITIES OF THE ANIMAL HUSBANDRY
DEPARTMENT :
Disease Control : Preventive Vaccinations
to the livestock are conducted with the department vaccine
for the control of following commonly occurring contagious
diseases in the district at the free of cost.

Anthrax, Sheep Pox, E.T and PPR
Poultry RD
(F), R.D (K), F.P
In addition to the above ,vaccination against Foot and
mouth disease in cattle will be conducted under special
programmes such as drought and plan schemes for weaker
sections.
Treatment of Ailing Animals : The treatment
to the animals suffering from various diseases is provided
through the Veterinary Polyclinic at Khammam which is
a referral Hospital with specialties, 10 Veterinary Hospitals,
78 Veterinary Dispensaries and 149 Rural Livestock Units.
The para Veterinary staff working at Rural Livestock Units
are working under the supervision of concerned Veterinary
Assistant Surgeon .
Cattle Development : The Artificial Insemination
Service to the cattle and buffaloes is provided through
(229) Veterinary Institutions and (52) Gopalamitras. The
Indigenous breeds like Ongole, and Exotic breeds of Jersey
& H.F frozen semen is used for crossbreeding in cattle.
The local Non-descriptive buffaloes are upgraded with
the Murrah breed. The scrub bulls in the villages are
castrated to discourage natural service due to its disadvantages
and to improve the Artificial Insemination.
Fodder Development : Farmers are enlightened
about the importance of feeding green fodder to increase
the milk production and to reduce the production cost.
The information on improved fodder varieties like SSG-59-3,PC-23,African
Tall Maize, Russian Cowpea and Stylo Hamata etc., suitable
to this district are provided to the farmers. The slips
of perennial fodder crops of improved Para, Co-1, Co-2
and NB-21 are supplied to the farmers from the CSCC, Wyra
for propagation. The farmers are also growing the perennial
fodder variety of APBN-1 in the district and the fodder
production is very encouraging.
Extension Activities : Village/Mandal/District
level farmers training camps are conducted in the district
to educate the farmers on scientific management practices,
Disease control, Cattle development and fodder development
to enhance the milk, meat and egg production to provide
subsidiary income to the farmers. The department is technically
supporting the training programme organised by various
agencies like DRDA, ITDA, DWMA, AMCs and APRPRP etc.
Poverty Alleviation : The department
is providing all the technical services to the beneficiaries
covered under Animal Husbandry Sector by DRDA, SC Corporation,
I.T.D.A and other agencies. |
