The Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) is an independent, autonomous society registered under the Societies Act to implement the World Bank supported project with the Chief Minister as the Chairperson. The Andhra Pradesh District Poverty Initiatives Project –APDPIP is a 5 year project ( 2000-2005) being implemented by SERP.

Andhra Pradesh Rural Poverty Reduction Project (Velugu) APRPRP is implemented in Khammam District since 2002 under the supervision of SERP.

The Hon'ble Chief Minister launched the Velugu Project on 25th October, 2002 in Khammam District

115 Field functionaries (community coordinators) are selected and positioned in the 41 Velugu Project Mandals.
  • CC s were selected in a 5 stage selection process - written test, Group Discussion, village placement, behavioral event interview and final interview.
  • CCs were trained on the basic concepts of Self Help Groups and Velugu Concepts with a practical session of performing role plays and other exercises.
  • 19 Mandals are being supervised by the Tribal Project Management Unit (TPMU) and the remaining 22 Mandals are under District Project Management Unit (DPMU) control.
  • The five Non-Velugu mandals have also been covered with PIP/BPL Survey.
  • The following Subject specialists are working for implementation of Velugu Project in the District.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Objective of APRPRP is to enable the rural poor, particularly the poorest of the poor in AP to improve their livelihoods and quality of life.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES OF THE PROJECT

Strengthening the existing self help groups and building the poor people institutions like village organization and mandal samakhya.

PIP/BPL surveys have been conducted and the data has been computerized. After resurvey, the details of House Holds are as follows.

  • Analysis of the existing livelihoods and preparation of livelihoods enhancement action plan (LEAPs)
  • Providing employment opportunities to the rural poor.
  • Reduction of Wasteful Family expenditure in rural poor.
  • Providing Insurance coverage to rural poor in the groups approach.
  • The Mandal Velugu Trining Centers (MVTCs) have been opened in 41 ICP Mandals and they have been provided with all the facilities for capacity building purpose.
  • Addressing various social problems prevailing in the rural poor.
  • Expected outputs of the Project in Khammam district is about 1,50,000 poor families will be benefited by the project during the project period of 5 years.
