There are (772) Gram Panchayats in Khammam district, covering (46) Mandal Parishads. Elections were held so far to (762) Gram Panchayats and 7650 wards during August, 2001 and (7) Gram Panchayats and in 90 wards during December, 2001. Direct elections were held for the post of Sarpanchas and Ward Members.

The Inspecting and Supervisory using of the Gram Panchayats is the Collector (PW) headed by District Collector who is assisted by District Panchayat Officer and Divisional Panchayat Officers at Khammam, Kothagudem and Bhadrachalam and 46 Executive Officers (PR&RD) work at Mandal level.

There are (22) scheduled mandals, (9) partly scheduled mandals and (15) Non-scheduled mandals (1233) Revenue Villages in the District. Kusumanchi Mandal has highest number of Gram Panchayats (29) and Manuguru has lowest number of Gram Panchayats (4).

There are (65) Gram Panchayats where Sarpanchas and Ward Members were elected unanimously.


ACTIVITIES

1. STREETLIGHTING. : - All Gram Panchayats in the District were electrified except few of the hamlet villages, there are 92,380 street lights in the district.

2. SANITATION. : - In all (20) Notified Gram Panchayats, the Sanitation is being done with (68) Regular Sweepers, (98) NMRs Sweepers and most of the Gram Panchayats are letting out the work on contract basis. Gram Panchayats also take up Chlorination of wells and spreading of bleaching Powder in the Gram Panchayats areas towards precautionary measures to prevent epidemics.

3. DRINKING WATER. : - Out of (772) Gram Panchayats in the district (418) Protected Water Supply Schemes are functioning for supply of Drinking Water to the public. Besides this (12,837) hand pumps are existing.

4. DEMAND COLLECTION & BALANCES OF TAXES. :- The main sources of the income of the Gram Panchayats are local taxes, namely House Tax, Lighting Tax, water Tax, entertainment Tax and fee permissible as per A.P.P.R. SAND AUCTIONS. There are 88 reaches identified for sand auctions, out of which auctions were conducted in 51 reaches.

FISHERY RIGHTS. As per the guidelines issued by the Commissioner, Panchayat Raj and Rural Employment A.P. Hyderabad all the Executive Authorities of Gram Panchayats are leasing out the fishery rights to the Fishermen co-operative Societies concerned as well as private Contractors.
