PREAMBLE
The Nagarjunasagar Project is one of the major multipurpose River
Valley Projects in Andhra Pradesh, built across River Krishna
at Nandikonda(v), Pedavoora(m) of Nalgonda Dt., to provide irrigation
facilities to about 0.90 Million Hectares of parched lands and
also to develop seasonal power of 960 Mega Watts. The project
comprises of a dam with two main canals taking off, one on either
side, namely N.S.Left Main Canal and N.S.Right Main Canal.

LEFT MAIN CANAL
The N.S.Left Main Canal, named as Lal Bahadur Canal, takes
off from the foreshore of the Reservoir through an independent
head regulator runs for a length of 178 Kms. and extends as 21st
Main Branch Canal for a length of 117 Kms. This contour canal
crosses major rivers, Halia, Musi and Munneru by means of aqueducts
and also passes through deepcuts. It is designed for the carrying
capacity of 11,000 cusecs to irrigate 4.20 Lakhs Hectares in Nalgonda,
Khammam, Krishna and West Godavari Districts utilizing 132 TMC
of water allocated by Krishna Waters Distribution Tribunal.
The Palair reservoir, which is a Medium Irrigation Project at
Palair(V) in Kusumanchi(M), is being utilized as balancing reservoir
for N.S. Left Main Canal. The capacity of this reservoir is 2.55
TMC.
